De klokken / The bells
| 11 bells in the bell chamber. | We were just informed that on Christmas 2014 (just 3 days before this film was uploaded) El Jaume came down while being rung and broke its crown. El Jaume is one of biggest and one of the oldest bell in El Micalet, but also probably the most impressive bell. In this video, you can see El Jaume in full glory at 25:30-28:10. First apparition is at 24:05. |
For the other bells the wildest figures circulate. Some of them are based on old traditions being transmitted continuously, but the quoted figures are not realistic. As an example the entrance ticket for the tower gives 3590 kg for La Maria, but this sounds absurd to us. For those bells we have made an own estimate of the weight based on the following empirical relation: |
w = (d / A)^4 * (f / 528 Hz) kg
where:w = weight of the bell
d = diameter of the bell
f = frequentie of the nominal (octave) partial of the bell
A = 22.2 cm for a mean estimate of the weight of the bell
= 22.7 cm for a reasonable lower limit for the weight of the bell
= 21.7 cm for a reasonable upper limit for the weight of the bell
| Traditionally Spanish bells have no pitch. The pitch is of no importance, since the peals do not form a melodic pattern, but rather a rhythmic pattern. Yet, based on the sound analysis and based on the perception by ear by Northern people, a pitch can be assigned to each bell. We derived the pitches of the bells, both by using the sound analysis, and by carefully listening to the bells. These are the pitches mentioned above. For two bells there are two values. El Vicent is nominally an a1 (a flat a1: a1-36), but in combination with the other bells (which are all sharp: e.g. El Jaume: f#+39), it sounds as a g#1 to the ear. With La Bàrbera there is a special phenomenon. All low partials seem to be doublets (but then with the prime being completely absent). As a consequence there are two canadidate nominals, being a semitone apart. El Jaume en La Bàrbera have the heaviest profile, La Violant has the lightest profile |

| This formula gives an estimate of the weight of a bell with a 10% margin. We still do expect some 10% of the bells to fall outside these margins (no crown or heavier crown, extra ornamentation on the upper part of the bell, deviating composition of the bronze, deviating profile, ...). |
